Duty-Free Online Shopping: How Icewear Will Pay Your Customs Fees

For all the things you forgot at the last minute, for all those souvenirs that wouldn’t fit into your suitcase, online shopping is a way to bring more of Iceland into your own home after the trip is over. Local food delicacies or signature pieces of clothing that hearken back to a great vacation help to bridge the distance when you can’t make the trip yourself. The worry with international online shopping is: What happens when your order gets to the border? When will that package arrive, and will it come with an added customs fee upon delivery?

While it’s true that your order may be subject to customs delays and sometimes even extra fees, it’s important to remember that customs agencies exist for the protection of the country’s citizens. Customs officials ensure dangerous and illegal goods do not come in, and that items that are accepted meet appropriate guidelines.

At ICEWEAR, we do our best to process and ship your order quickly, but to avoid disappointment—especially if you need to receive your order by a certain date—it’s good to be aware that there may be a delay as it is processed through your country’s borders. We advise shoppers to factor in time for customs delay when placing an order. While we can’t control the customs process, we at ICEWEAR do everything we can to get your order to you in a timely manner. We try to process your order within 24 hours after you place it with us (orders received after midday Friday would be processed for shipping by Monday). To support our policy of fast delivery we use DHL, an international courier service that guarantees delivery within 3-5 business days. Once your order has been processed and shipped, you can track the progress of your shipment on the DHL website.

Customs Regulations and Shipping Fees from Iceland

Customs fees are an unpleasant fact of life. Anything you buy from Iceland exceeding a certain value is subject to customs duties upon entering your country. Because Iceland does not have a free trade agreement with the United States of America, people in the US making online purchases from Iceland may be required to pay duties levied by US Customs and Border Protection. Those who are shopping online for shipping to the European Union may also have to pay customs fees. While Iceland is a member of the European Economic Area (EEA), the EEA is not a customs union like the EU. Customs agencies of individual countries within the EU will be able to provide information on their customs policies and practices.

We at ICEWEAR don’t want you to be deterred by the prospect of customs fees, so we’ve implemented a policy to refund any fees you may be required to pay upon delivery of your order. When you receive your package, if you have to pay customs duties, just send us an email with your order details and attach an image of the customs invoice. ICEWEAR will pay that amount back to you, refunding via the method of payment you used when you made your purchase.

Because you can’t always come to our stores in person, ICEWEAR wants your ordering experience to be as seamless as possible. And in the unlikely event that your order gets slowed down by a customs delay, we hope that at least by refunding the customs fees we give you an added level of convenience.
